2021 DGC Opener at StoneTree: Happy Returns

NOVATO, Calif. - In yet another sure sign of things returning steadily to normal, Tom Yee has won a Dragons golf tournament.

But can he win the whole thing finally this season?

After a truncated #2020 season due to the pandemic, the Dragons were back in full force competing at StoneTree Golf Club in Novato last weekend in the 2021 Season Opener.  Two flights of medal play/net scoring competition, with field low gross, KP’s and prizes to boot.  It won’t be long before we are able to hang out together again for our post tournament bites and salutes of the champion golfers of the day.

What was unusual was the high scores — nobody came close to breaking net par.  The springtime weather was fine, but to be fair, Johnny Miller designs are never easy — or fair, for that matter.  The greens were still recovering and some fairways were still punctured — playing the ball down made for some tricky lies.

Nevertheless, the plinker prevailed.  Tom’s 85/net 76 was one better than Alex Chong’s 94/net 77 for the A flight title.  Liang Chen finished third with 87/net 79.  Tom’s 85 was also the field low gross, beating Paul Loui’s 85 in a card-off.

"Tom was his usual self, hit it in the fairway, knock it on or close, then rely on his putting to close the deal,” said Rob Dang (102/net 92).

In the B flight, 2015 Dragon Cup champ Jon Chong (93/net 75) bested Fan Li (94/net 75) in a card-off.  Defending Dragon Cup champ Mike Gui came in third (98/net 78).

“(Alex and I) were both shocked to finish that high because we both felt we played very poorly and didn’t think the course was that difficult,” Jon said. "Wind was certainly a factor as the day went on."

With the opener in the books, the Dragon Cup ’21 standings look like the StoneTree medal stand, obviously. Half of the club has yet to make their first start. The next tour stop?  BlackHorse in Monterey on May 1 — please don’t forget to sign up for the tournament, the deadline is THURSDAY, April 15 (see club website). We will also open registration for the very exclusive outing at Mayacama soon.

Welcome back, Dragons!
