Mayacama 2021: Birdies in Paradise

Birdies in Paradise
by Jason Shu

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - In a rare treat, Dragons were invited to play at the Mayacama Golf Club up north in Sonoma County. As one of Jack Nickalus' top designs, the course presented the most anticipated and daunting challenge in recent memory.

It was a picture perfect day and four Dragons managed to net par or better, but the real story of the afternoon was the whopping 20(!!!) natural birdies that were carded - 13 by the A Flight and a very respectable 7 by the B Flight. The greens were rolling true, and an amazing time was had by all.

In the end, home course advantage ruled, with hosts Paul Nakata 78/69 (-3) and Jeff Yee 87/72 (E) placing 1st and 3rd, respectively, in the A Flight. Danny Garcia, who carded the low gross of the day with an impressive 75, placed 2nd at net 71 (-1).

On the B side, 2nd year Dragon James Walbridge played a steady round and took home 1st prize with a 91/72 for the only net par for the Bs. Kellen Tsuruoka came in 2nd with a 96/76 (+4), which was highlighted by a massive 350 yard drive, to which one caddie exclaimed, "I've never seen anybody play their second shot from this position before." Coming in 3rd for the Bs was Mike Gui. Mike, who had an up-and-down day, shot a 97/78 (+6) that included an incredible three natural birdies.

Afterwards, in yet another step towards normalcy, participants were treated to a beautiful reception overlooking the picturesque hills of Mayacama. Many new members were welcomed and another phenomenal event was in the books.

Next up will be Green Valley on July 15th, which will take us past the halfway point in the season - we hope to see you there!
