PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. The Dragons Golf Club's 10th anniversary season began in Monterey, at the Poppy Hills Golf Course. The season opener is always buzzing with the promise of a new year, seeing buddies again, and welcoming the new members to the club. It's been tradition to kick things off at a stellar course, that also hosts the after round meal, and the unveiling of the member gifts.
Poppy Hills definitely fit the bill, as it is the NCGA's crown jewel course, and plays host to many of the Northern California Championship events. It presented a challenge for the lower handicap A flight as no one went low. The B flight had three good scores and that's all there is to say about that. Gross 79 was a popular score for the A Flight. Rookie Jung Yun "Phillip" Won took home low gross with the 79. Old timers Paul Loui and Mike Lum both shot 79/net 75, finishing 4th and 3rd respectively. Chris Wong shot 88/75 to nab 2nd in the A Flight. Too bad he invited his nephew, Justin Fong to join the club, as the rookie shot a tidy 82/74 to place 1st in the A Flight. Justin won the A Flight without making a birdie or any long putt all day, so the Louie's, Lum's and Brian Miller's are on notice that there's a new stick to contend with this year. B Flight had some decent net scores at this tough course. Jon Chong saved a lot of holes and kept mostly out of trouble to win the B Flight with an 86/net 69. Jeff Yee is starting to feel better after his scary concussion from getting hit in the head from an errant golf ball last year. He hung tough, shooting 88/70 to place 2nd. Mieko Sugimoto is up to her tricks again, shooting a solid 85/73 for 3rd place. Rob Dang's 95/79 was somehow good for 4th place, but that's how hard Poppy Hills is.
Event 1 of Season 10 ended in style, as the The Dragon Golf Board handed out Nike duffle bags with the the Dragon emblem. This very high quality bag will get noticed when the Dragon's descend upon Bend, Oregon for the Bucket List trip in July.
