Yocha Dehe Turns Up the Heat on the Dragons

By Karen Fong

BROOKS, Calif. - For the second tournament of the year, the Dragons traveled to an old favorite, Yocha Dehe Golf Course at the Cache Creek Casino Resort. True to form, the course yielded some “special” weather with highs topping out in the 90s for the first time this season. The breezeless heat was energy-sapping, but arguably better than the freak summer thunderstorm with hail encountered on a previous outing.

The view upon arriving to the course is always picturesque with pristine fairways surrounded by rolling hills laid out below. The bucolic setting, however, proved to be deceptively challenging, with only four competitors posting net scores in the red.

With a modest field, competition was limited to a single flight. Low gross of the field was again awarded to the perpetual Kirin cup champion, Mike Lum, with a gross score of 73, narrowly beating out brand new daddy Danny Garcia, by a single stroke.

In a tight finish in net stroke play, the top three places were tied at net 70, with Alex Chong taking first in a tiebreaker over Mike Lum (2nd) and Danny Garcia (3rd).  Fourth place was awarded to Kellen Tsuruokawith a net 71.

Sadly, the traditional post round trip to the casino buffet has been a victim to Covid so a large group of Dragons gathered instead for burgers and pub fare at the sports bar, before hitting the long road home.  Danny Garcia and Mike Lum were spotted heading toward the casino, likely with Danny trying to extend his hall pass for as long as possible. It is rumored that Mike, who forgot his wallet, was seen trying to gamble with his Amazon gift cards…

Our next tournament will be held at Green Hills CC on June 12, 2022. The tournament will be followed immediately in the clubhouse by the Draft Dinner for the Weekender.  For those of you who are new to the Dragons, the Weekender, which will be held this year in Lake Tahoe on July 8-10, 2022, is the signature event of the season, when two teams square off in Ryder Cup -style competition. This year’s Weekender will be played at Grizzly Ranch GC and Whitehawk Ranch GC on Saturday and Sunday respectively, with an optional round on Friday.

Sign-ups for Green Hills will be opening this week. Please remember, that although you do not have to play the Green Hills tournament to participate, a commitment to playing the Weekender must be made prior to the Green Hills tournament as players will be drafted onto either Team Red or Team Black by the respective team captains at the Draft dinner.
